Life Insurance for Veterans

Protecting Those Who Served — With Coverage Tailored to Your Needs

Life after service comes with unique challenges — and having the right life insurance can provide your family with peace of mind, financial security, and protection against the unexpected. Whether you’re transitioning to civilian life, managing new responsibilities, or planning long-term, private life insurance offers flexible, affordable options designed specifically for veterans.

How Veterans Life Insurance Works

Private life insurance for veterans works like traditional coverage but is designed with your service experience and future in mind. You choose the type and amount of coverage, premiums that fit your budget, and beneficiaries to protect.

  • Choose from term life, whole life, or universal life insurance tailored to your financial goals.

  • Premiums can be fixed or flexible depending on the policy type.

  • Coverage amounts range widely to protect income, debts, or long-term legacy.

  • Policies build cash value (for permanent plans) or provide straightforward death benefits (for term plans).

Private life insurance offers veterans personalized protection — giving you control and choice beyond government programs.

Why Veterans Choose Private Life Insurance

Veterans often want life insurance policies that reflect their individual circumstances, including health, family goals, and financial planning needs.

  • Customizable coverage: Policies can be tailored to fit your current and future financial goals.

  • Competitive rates: Many insurers offer veteran discounts or specialized underwriting for former service members.

  • Flexible terms: Choose coverage length and benefits that match your lifestyle.

  • Cash value growth: Permanent plans accumulate cash value you can borrow against or use later.

  • Financial peace of mind: Protect your family’s lifestyle, debts, and long-term plans.

Private life insurance puts you in the driver’s seat — with options designed to fit your life on and off duty.

Who Veterans Life Insurance Is Best For

Private life insurance is a great fit for veterans who:

  • Want flexible coverage beyond what employer or government benefits offer.

  • Need life insurance that adapts to changes like family growth or career shifts.

  • Prefer cash value accumulation with whole or universal life plans.

  • Are in good health and want to lock in affordable rates.

  • Seek policies that provide financial legacy protection for loved ones.

No matter where you are in your post-service journey, private life insurance can help safeguard your family’s future.

The More You Know

VETERAN PROTECTION FAQs

Can veterans get life insurance even with past health issues?

Yes. Many insurers offer policies with flexible underwriting, and some specialize in veterans to provide competitive rates despite health concerns.

What types of life insurance are best for veterans?

Whole and universal life provide permanent coverage with cash value benefits.

What if I have a service-connected disability?

Private insurers assess each case individually; some offer specialized underwriting or accommodations for veterans with disabilities.

Can veterans use life insurance benefits to help with funeral or burial costs?

Absolutely. Life insurance death benefits can be used by your beneficiaries to cover funeral expenses, burial costs, and other end-of-life expenses, easing financial stress during difficult times.

Why do I need private life insurance if I already have coverage through the VA?

VA life insurance programs offer important benefits, but private life insurance can provide additional flexibility, higher coverage amounts, and more customization. It can help fill gaps, cover unique financial goals, and offer benefits your VA policy might not include — giving you greater control over your family’s protection.

Doesn't the VA pay for everything already?

The VA does not cover all of the funeral or cremation arrangements of honorably discharged veterans.

What you’re entitled to is less than $1000 for a burial allowance, and less than $1000 for a plot allowance outside the national cemetery. Caskets or Urns also must be covered by the family.

While the VA provides valuable benefits, such as healthcare and certain survivor benefits, these may not cover all expenses your family could face. Life insurance helps ensure your loved ones have the financial resources to handle things like mortgage payments, daily living costs, education, and unexpected bills—expenses that VA benefits alone might not fully cover.

Do I need it if I'm getting buried in a National Cemetery?

Did you know that you actually can no longer reserve space in a VA national cemetery ahead of time?

You’re still able to pre-register, so you can get the paperwork done, but it does not guarantee you a spot.

If you do get into the national cemetery – what it includes is the assigned gravesite, IF that space is available, the opening and closing of the grave, and the headstone or marker.

The easiest way to look at this, your family pays for everything that happens before you reach the cemetery gate (such as the casket, funeral services, transportation costs, cremation costs, etc.). Everything after the cemetery gates is what would be covered for you by the VA if you qualify.
